Calvin Mattos scored the go-ahead basket with 23 seconds left as the Waiakea Warriors edged Paiea 51-49 over Memorial Day weekend at Andrews Gym to claim the championship at a Hawaii Isle Police Activities League “Click It or Ticket” high school and intermediate school basketball tournament.

Mattos, the BIIF Division I Player of the Year, led the way with 23 points and Kahinu Alapai added 12.

Bayley Malinguis scored 14 points for Paiea, which missed a 3-point shot as time expired.

Members of the championship Waiakea squad were Mattos, Alapai, Wes Amuimuia, Ken Bugado, Cameron Caravalho-Chinen, Noah Ferreira, Nigel Henry, Shaun Kojima and Justin Tavares.

Saint Joseph ran past Hilo 57-42 to claim third place. Manato Fukuda scored 16 and Cole Desilva 12 to lead St. Joseph.

The tournament, held in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), provided education to parents and youth in using their seat belts when operating or being a passenger in a motor vehicle.

Multiple winners

N One, Shut D, and two NSD teams won titles as 25 teams laced it up at the “Click It or Ticket” championships earlier in the month at Panaewa Park.

10-and-under division: NSP claimed the title, Andrews Hawks were runners-up and Fly Girls finished third. Members of the NSP were Tamatasi Sauta, Daniel Remsen, Skyler Caravalho, Ryzen Bautista-Cazimero, Landon Kauka, Kayzen Htner, Hezekiah Wilson, Easton Hoshida, Layden Kauka, Keale Valenzuela and Trevor Figueroa.

12-and-under title: NSP won with Man Up finishing second and Stingrays third. Members of the NSP were Oshe Cazimero, Koby Agbayani, Laakea kauka, Tre Walker, Moses Emeliano, Molonai Emeliano, Zhane Ching and Keone Barco.

14-and-under division: Shut D claimed the title, Hoop Dreams were runners-up and Stingrays placed third. Members of the championship Shut D were Shrew Lalley, Micah Low, Elijah Antonio, Zayden Tolentino, Javan Motta, Howard Robert, Kainoa Jones and Kelsen Walker.

Grades 8-10: N One prevailed, Hoop Dreams finished second and Hilo Vikings claimed third. Members of the championship N-One squad included Justin Cabanilla, Chance Simeona, Jax Uyemura, Teyson Ishimoto, Wesley Amuimuia, Justin Tavares, Shaun Kojima, Ken Bugado, Jen Uyeda and Jace Nagao.

As good as gold

The Waiakea Titans Gold finished 8-0 in the regular season and won the intermediate league playoffs.

Members of Titans Gold were Kia‘i Apele, Mikey Bugado, Kilohana Haasenritter, Kawai Kiko, Shesley Martines, Magnus Namohala-Roloos, Guyson Ogata and Rekki Prudencio.

The Keaau Green also ran through the season 8-0.

In the elementary division, Keaau claimed the preseason tournament championship, and the Waiakea Titans won the postseason tournament.

Members of Keaau were Rockie Abadilla, Steel Abadilla, Jazelle Dorser, Justis Dorser, Bryanna Ganir, Owen Hernando, Jett Mantz, Josiah Ramones, Kobe Tabuyo-Kahele and Paea Taliauli. Members of the Waiakea Titans were Zayre Fuiava, Kamalu Haleamau, Glendon Ogata, Jayke Prudencio, Trace Tengan and Braedy Yamada.

The goal of the league is to provide youth with a positive activity during the latch-key hours of 3-7 p.m. as an alternative to harmful activities.

League participants are required to play for their school team.
